A dogacino or muffin for your dog perhaps?
Dogs love walks, this is a known fact. But what dogs love even more is a visit to the Doghouse Cafe and store on Johnston Street in Fitzroy. In this combination of a store selling dog toys and accessories, dog essentials and yummy dog food, the addition of a courtyard cafe is a welcome bonus for both owners and dogs.
On walking into the store, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a delicatessen store. So good did the fresh dog treats look that I had to remind myself this was for the dogs, not humans. There was of course raw meat, but there were also muffins and similar delectables made specifically for the canine requirements and tastes. There is even dog ice cream! All these treats can be taken home or eaten in the cafe.
Outside in the small courtyard space of the cafe is where all the eating begins. There are 10 small spaces where owners and dogs can enjoy their cappuccinos and dogacinos in peace, knowing the dog will not be bothered by, or bother other dogs as the spaces have a gate on them. On the day I visited all the individual spaces were occupied and there were also dogs and owners sitting in the communal middle space. On looking into the closed off spaces, I could see dogs sipping their dogacinos and eating their muffins.Their owners were doing the same, as well as reading their Saturday newspapers, comfortable in the knowledge their dogs would not be begging for food at other tables. Some dogs were excited by the sight of a stranger looking at them and made sure they had their photo taken.

A couple of dogs were happy to sit with other dogs and start up new friendships, just as their owners were. Dog owners know very well how easy it is to meet fellow dog walkers and start up conversations and friendships. Here is now an opportunity to do so in the Doghouse c]\Cafe and share dog experiences whilst sipping coffee - both the human and canine variety.
