Dogfight is based on the 1991 cult movie of the same name that starred River Phoenix (Birdlace) and Lili Taylor (Rose). First you need to understand the connotation of the word 'dogfight' in relation to the play that's being presented.
It's the name for a particularly cruel contest played in 1963. A final night's shore liberty sees a few friends hold a 'dogfight'. A competition to see who can find the ugliest date. The one with the best 'dog' wins the cash.
Doorstep Arts presents the eve of deployment for three young Marines who set out for one final boy's night of debauchery, partying and perhaps a little trouble.
Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose through whom he plans to win the cruel bet he made with his fellow recruits. She may be an awkward waitress, but she's idealistic and turns the rules of the game on its head and teaches Birdlace the power of compassion.
To quote Director Darylin Ramondo, 'The cast includes some of the industry's most exciting young performers and we can't wait to present Dogfight to the Melbourne stage'.
