Dog-friendly Bars in Thornbury/Preston

Taking my fur baby with me to Thursday night drinks is becoming more regular as the weather heats up. But instead of getting into the rut of having to go to the same spot – because you know they have a space outside for your furry friend – check out these Preston/Thornbury favourites.

These bars and cafes have perfectly dog-suited outdoor areas where you aren't shoved down an alleyway with the smokers or forced to dine on the sidewalk. With water bowls aplenty and soft AstroTurf for their little paws, take the time to grab your pooch and check out these neighbourhood gems.

All these venues are bike friendly if your furry friend can manage it or alternatively, all these venues are on tram line 86 so if your pup is small enough, pop them in an enclosed container. See Yarra Trams for more information on transporting your pets.

Welcome to Thornbury

An open-air venue, Welcome to Thornbury is Melbourne's first permanent bar and food truck stop. Set up perfectly for an evening with your canine companion, an array of food trucks fill the venue, with different ones rotated through every night. With a full bar and the schedule for January and February boasting themes such as Vegan Vegout and Fried Chicken Takeover, you'll find a night and truck for all dietary and beverage preferences.

Because the venue is booming with locals enjoying the summer breeze and daylight savings sunset, the area is often crowded with both people and their furry friends. So if your dog is a little skittish in crowds or can't settle around other dogs, this is somewhere you'll need to head to early. But with Welcome to Thornbury opening at 5 pm Monday to Friday and 12 pm on the weekends, you can easily avoid the crowds to enjoy some yum cha, Greek food or pizza.

Alight at stop 35 or make the short stroll to Croxton Train Station.

Stray Neighbour

Situated on 467 Plenty Road, Stray Neighbour is a bar and eatery begging for puppy companions. The frontage is an open eating area with AstroTurf and a tree, providing patrons with a luscious green setting and plenty of shade. A pet peeve of mine is venues with exquisite beer gardens that are behind the venue, and because my baby can't trek through the eating area, she misses out on an evening of socialising. But at Stray Neighbour, the garden is easily accessible and with large tables and comfy chairs, dining here isn't a drag.

Parking your bike is super easy or tram still 50 will drop you off at the front door.

The Raccoon Club

It may change, or it may stay the same, but this Preston favourite is currently up for sale so make sure you pick up your pooch and check it out.

This childless bar provides a unique and very Melbourne approach to dining. Floating around it in red folders are the takeaway menus of all the local eateries. After asking the bar staff to order the food, or doing it yourself, either wait with a pint for your order to be delivered or use the bar's courtesy bicycle to grab the food yourself. No muss, no fuss, just friendly service, and the outside area is quaint but perfect for Thai food and beers with your beloved by your side. Fellow punters will shower them with pats and when your baby is ready to chill, they will have a slide show of interesting things to keep them occupied will you sip on your vino.

Jump off at Tram stop 44 to join in the fun.
