There are some key ingredients needed for a successful musical: a great story, a brilliant cast, unforgettable music and spectacular sets. From all accounts, it looks as though, Doctor Zhivago, starting at QPAC in July, has the perfect mix of all of these.
What started out as a popular book by Russian author Boris Pasternak, has since become a blockbuster movie, a television serial, a mini-series and now a musical. Doctor Zhivago is a classic love story, set in Russia against a backdrop of World War I, the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War. A great story and spectacular setting? Tick.
Doctor Zhivago himself will be played by Australia's king of the stage, Anthony Warlow, a man who can impress even the most staunch musical sceptics. A brilliant cast? Tick.
All that is needed now is a successful musical score. While there may not be any familiar show tunes in this musical, the composer, Lucy Simon, has a couple of Grammies and Tony nominations under her belt, so I am sure that this show will produce some new favourites. Unforgettable music? Tick.
The director, John Frost, has said "After the famous film version what remains exciting about this iconic novel is its personal story of love, loss and dreams. The stage intensifies the personality of this story with the musical focusing on the people at its centre".
Tickets are on sale now and range from $59.90 to $149.90 – a small price to pay to see Anthony Warlow in a role that seems almost made for him.
