Sandy Bay, an inner city suburb of Hobart, is 2.1 km from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, 1.6 km from Brooke Street pier (ferry to Mona) and 14 km from Mount Wellington. This makes it an ideal spot to catch up with family friends: a central location with access to parking.

We lunched at the at 139 Sandy Bay Road. The Hotel, originally dating from 1846, was named after a winning British thoroughbred horse that raced in the early 1820s, and which was named after a colourful character created by the British writer William Combe in a series of satirical poems, most notably The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax. According to my brief research, this poem satirised William Gilpin, a travel writer who came up with the concept of "picturesque".

But back to lunch ...

There is both an indoor and outdoor dining area at the back of the hotel, the latter with views of Mt Wellington (or Kunyani). Though let's be honest, this is a pub you visit for the quality of the food, not the aesthetics.

The menu is extensive, including a Children's Menu and Seniors Meals (lunchtimes only). Lunch is available 7 days a week 12 noon - 2 pm and Dinners from 5pm - 8pm Mondays through to Saturday To check out the menu go here . To whet your appetite, here are a few snaps of our lunch. Let's just say that dinner was not required.

Off-street parking is plentiful and reservations are recommended on 03-6223-6258. Isn't it interesting that good tucker makes for even better conversation!
