Discover Docklands like you’ve never experienced it before
The Firelight Festival is back this year with a fun-filled event for all ages. It will be on during the winter solstice and you will be able to watch incredible nightly pyrotechnics, flame jets and fire drums, roving performers and eclectic music.
There will be more than 40 performances each night, and these from all corners of the world.
They will include:
New Orleans brass
A one-man band
Each night, watch the fascinating burning of one of three handmade, giant wooden sculptures created by Melbourne-based artist, Christian Patton. These will be at Victoria Harbour this year. Along with these "burns", there will be spectacular pyrotechnics.
Winter solstice traditions invite "good fortune and warding off evil spirits" for the coming year. Fire drums, flaming jets and fire performances will keep you warm on the outside while a burning barbecue, saucy paellas, soups, sweets, mulled wine and warming hot chocolate, will keep you warm throughout the night. It will be on at Docklands, 131-141 Harbour Esplanade, New Quay Promenade, Harbour Esplanade & Victoria Harbour Promenade.
The opening weekend for the Festival will be on 29th June to 1st July, 2018, and times are: Friday: 5 pm to 10 pm
Saturday: 5 pm to 10 pm Sunday: 5 pm to 10 pm
There will be many events during this Firelight Festival and some of these include:
Firelight Festival Long Table Dinners
These will be held at Chiara, 705 Collins Street, Melbourne, on Tuesday 3rd July, 2018. Cost will be $45, and you can book here.
This will be a mouth-watering three-course dinner where you will be served the best in Italian flavours. And this all as the night comes alive with fire performances, right in the heart of Docklands.
To close out Firelight Festival, Chiara will also be holding a second three-course dinner that explores the flavours of Italy with a twist. This will be on Thursday 31st July, and book for this event here.
Firelight Festival Storytelling at Buluk Park
This will be held at Buluk Park, 894-910 Collins Street, Docklands.
You can sit by the fire as you listen to stories told by special guest, Jo Stanley from her literary series, Play like a Girl. There will also be a Q&A session. As well as this unique storytelling evening, you and the children will be able to relax and have some delicious food from the Docklands dining hamper. There will be warming hot chocolates from KEP Whitley, and Italian delights, courtesy of Saluministi.
Speakeasy Series No 1 at the Hightail Bar
Warm your soul and "embrace the speakeasy lifestyle" this winter with a night of 1930's fun evening. The Hightail Bar will light up winter as the first destination of the Docklands' Speakeasy Series. It will be an evening of solstice-inspired entertainment from a local musician. While listening you will be sipping a delightful winter cocktail! There will be a variety of European tapas for you to try and a drink upon arrival.
The Hightail Bar is at 727 Collins St, and it is on from 6 pm to 8 pm, on Tuesday 10th July, and cost is $30.
Firelight Festival Dining at Docklands
Firelight Festival's Dining at Docklands is perfect for the Melbourne foodie. The series will start at Bar Nacional joining The Hof Downtown and 90 Secondi, for an indulgent progressive dinner. Included in this dinner will be mulled wine, to warm you as well as wood-fired pizza.
The chefs at Saluministi will bring you a fire-inspired cheese-smoking workshop to complete this magnificent celebration of Melbourne food. It will be a traditional Italian evening, with heaps of food and entertainment.
Dining at Docklands No. 2 – City River Cruises with Cargo
You can experience Docklands from the water (even if you don't own a boat!) this winter. Here you will have spectacular views of the city of Melbourne and the lights.
You will be on the City River Cruise's iconic, Melba Star, for a one-hour cruise from Docklands Harbour. This will be complete with live entertainment, food provided by local eateries, as well as these breathtaking views of Melbourne.
Docklands' eatery Cargo will serve you canapes as well as some finger food as your boat meanders through Docklands, with possibly a glass of champagne or imported beer.
You can also go to their waterfront restaurant after the cruise for drinks.
This will be held on Wednesday 18th July, from 5.45 pm to 6.45 pm. It will leave from the Melbourne City Marina, Berth C03, New Quay Promenade, 439 Docklands Drive. Tickets are just $42 and you can book here.
Here you can watch the world-class pyrotechnics display on board this iconic Melbourne Showboat. If you would like to go to any of these events by public transport, here is a link to detailed information.
This year, the festival will be bigger and better than it was last year at the inaugural event. It will be a great event for all "Melbournites", so make sure you mark the dates!
