Bondi Beach is one of the many beaches that dot the coastline of Sydney's eastern suburbs. In the long Aussie summers, locals and tourists flock to Bondi for the sun, the surf, and the many wonderful cafes and restaurants.

Bondi, however, is only the beginning of a strip of beautiful beaches in Sydney's east. One of the best ways to see these beaches, and take in the spectacular coastal views, is to do the 'Bondi to Coogee Walk' (or as we did it this winter – the Coogee to Bondi walk and back again).

Depending on what time of the year you enjoy this walk, you may be lucky enough to spot some whales as they migrate up the coast. The migration season is from May to November. This walk is suitable for all ages, but you do need to be able to walk up and down stairs and hills. We encountered families with babies and small children, people walking their dogs, joggers, and many photographers, both amateur and professional. If there is a downside to this walk, it is that some parts of it can be windy, but then again, it is a coastal walk.

The walk extends for 6kms along a coastline of widespread views (the horizon is clearly visible on a sunny day), beach-side suburbs, cliffs, and secluded bays. As you amble along the walk, there are areas that make you feel you are thousands of miles from anywhere, not in one of Australia's busiest cities.

Walk via beaches such as Bronte and Tamarama, where you can rest, take a swim, or eat at one of the many restaurants, cafes or hotels. If you do the walk in summer, you can appreciate a cold beer available on tap at the hotels. Speaking of Aussie summers, it is highly recommended you wear good sun protection such as a hat, sunscreen and sensible clothing, to suit the hot sun. This is the reason we did this walk in winter, summer is for swimming, if you ask me.
