Yagan Square was hard hit by COVID with many businesses closing. Now DevelopmentWA is working to revitalize the area with new hospitality venues and an expanded program of events. On
4 & 11 December and continuing in 2023,
Djindoon Djenung: Look to the Stars is an evening of Dreamtime storytelling and stargazing. This
free event is an informative and entertaining blend of history, culture and tradition sure to delight the whole family.
Djindoon Djenung Goologoolup is presented by award-winning Noongar guide Walter McGuire of Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours and Experiences
. Go Cultural was started by Walter and his wife Meg to tell the story of the Noongar people through tours and experiences in culturally significant Perth locations.
The evening begins with a welcome to country and continues with Dreamtime stories, tales of post-colonial life, traditional dance and songs. It concludes with a Smoking Ceremony, said to bring healing and connection to country.
Goologoolup is the Noongar name for the area around Yagan Square, the Perth Arena and the train station, which contained two large swamps. These were part of a chain of freshwater lakes, swamps, and wetlands that provided a variety of food sources to Noongar people.
Brought to you by DevelopmentWA, Tourism WA and the City of Perth, this event is free but places are limited and registration is required.
