Sydney plays host to a very unique event this week as DJ Smokin' Joe, the self-proclaimed "most electrifying man in dance music today", is attempting to set the new Guinness World Record for the longest DJ set. Holed up in the Empire Hotel, Kings Cross, Smokin' Joe aims to smash the current record of 150 hours by spinning discs for an unbelievable 168 hours, meaning he will need to stay behind decks for seven days straight.
This not being challenge enough, Joe has also set himself the goal of not repeating any songs during the marathon gig. Twitter account at the ready, Joe is a man on a mission, tweeting the track name of every single song as it plays as well as hourly updates on his progress. His most recent tweet sees him rejoice, "47 hours! I have the power!"
To make sure that his attempt is carried out to Guinness standards and that he will be guaranteed the record at the end of the week, Joe has paid $7000 of his own money to fly in an official Guinness adjudicator. If these are the kind of jobs Guinness adjudicators get, sign me up!
According to Guinness guidelines, candidates are allowed two hours of rest for every 24 hours spent attempting a record, meaning Joe will at least have time to catch a bit of shut-eye if he so desires. But you can be sure he'll be wide awake as 4pm this Saturday (23/12) rolls around, marking the end of his record live set and one hell of a party as he is handed the official certificate naming him the world record holder of The Longest DJ Set.
Joe's record attempt will be streamed live 24 hours a day at inthemix so if you can't make it down to party with the man himself, you can enjoy his non-stop set at home. Why not throw a party and celebrate with Joe as he reaches his goal?
