Have you ever wanted to learn some basic skills to repair household items to save some money, or re-invigorate your loved items through adding a touch of character at affordable cost? There are some great weekend workshops in town, which you can learn the techniques to take making into your own hands. In my humble opinion, I've picked the top five interesting workshops for your selection - cover for gadgets, furnishing, bicycle repairs, picture framing and jewellery making.
Fancy a customised design cover for your iPad? Here is great news for you. Workshops will run at Powerhouse Museum to guide you on how to rivet designer wool felt to make a small bag suitable for your iPad, and personalise your cover by stamping or embossing the leather strap with your name, picture stamps, embossed pattern or leather dye. The design can also be customised for an iPhone. Workshops will run on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27. $45 for adult and $40 for Powerhouse member (includes Museum admission).
Kerbside Coverings: Re-upholstering your favourite chair If you want to know how to give a fresh look on a simple dining chair or stool, there is a great workshop for you. Through the workshop, you will be able to learn how to use basic tools to re-upholster the furniture in a sustainable manner. Bring your own fabric to upholster. Workshops will run on May 26-27. $85 for adult and $80 for Powerhouse member (includes Museum admission).
If you love decorating your home with paintings, but are keen to save cost in doing this, picture framing is then the course for you. There is a two-day workshop aiming to teach you how to make a picture frame, and assist you in selecting a suitable production mode to meet your personal framing requirements. The workshops will run at Sydney Community College, Rozelle, between Jun 2 and Jun 9 at a cost of $249.
Bicycle Maintenance This is a workshop that enables you to learn how to do your general maintenance such as fix a puncture, or adjust brakes and gears. Bring your bike on Saturday 16 Jun between 10am and 1pm at North Sydney Community Centre, and you can master the basic skills in repairing your bike. This is free, but booking is essential.
Silver Jewellery Essentials Being able to wear jewellery in your own design is truly a satisfaction. It is achievable if you are willing to spend some time to acquire basic skills. Scheduled between 28 July and 11 August, the course of 3 lessons will guide you to learn basic silver working techniques so that you can design and produce your own items. This 3-day workshop costs $299 and will run at Sydney Community College, Rozelle.
