The will once again take place at Federation Square on October 30 2010. This Hindu religious festival is marked by large gatherings, feasts, gifts of sweets and displays of numerous lights.
Beginning at 10 am, Federation Square will be lively with activity as there will be numerous stalls exploring the different facets of Indian cuisine, the intricate craftsmanship of Indian Jewellery and Fashion and the diverse range of Indian cinema and music.
Also expected are demonstrations of traditional Henna painting, Classical Indian and Bollywood dance performances and workshops. There will also be Rides, Magic Shows and Games for the young and young at heart. A fireworks display at the banks of the Yarra will close the event in the evening.
Celebrate India are extending the festivities and are organising a number of activities including an after-party, which is a ticketed event and an accompanying film festival, check the Celebrate India website for details about the upcoming events.
This free event is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Federation Square throughout the day and all are welcome. Diwali literally translates to 'row of lamps' and refers to the lighting of clay lamps. The festival is a celebration of inner light and the triumph of good over evil - lighting up the 'darkness'.
