Diwali or Deepavali, the festival of lights, is returning to Melbourne to regale us with fantabulous festivities. Marking the triumph of good over evil through the lighting of radiant lamps, Diwali is a multicultural festival where everyone is welcome. Diwali celebrations will be held in various locations around Melbourne.
1. Diwali Festival of Lights in Federation Square
This October, Federation Square will drape itself with the funky colours of Diwali celebrations. The festivities will commence on 21 October 2013 with free screenings of Bollywood movies at the Square. On 26 October, the Diwali celebrations will kick off at 12pm and will incorporate a plethora of free events. The main stage will be taken over by a wide array of spectacular and impressive musical and dance performances.
There will be an effervescent presence of delectable Indian cuisine while numerous stall will be selling various Indian merchandise. Henna demonstrations and Bollywood workshops will be some of the features of this flamboyant festival. The festival will draw its curtain with an exquisite fireworks display next to the Yarra.
2. Diwali Festival at Sandown Racecourse Sandown Racecourse will be the setting for the Diwali Festival on 27 October 2013. The dazzling celebrations will commence from 11:30am and will run until 9:30pm. Providing an alcohol free environment, this event will ensure that every member of the family will have a ball while partaking in the Diwali celebrations. Multi-cultural musical programmes and performance will regale the guests.
There will be a horde of stalls offering a wide array of Indian merchandise while there will be ample provision of aromatic and flavoursome authentic Indian fare. Henna and tattoo stalls will give you an opportunity to remember the event with beautiful henna tattoos. All the hustle and bustle of the event will come to a conclusion with a brilliant display of fantastic fireworks.
3. Deepavali Celebrations
Deepavali Celebrations will be organised in the Sri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs on 3 November 2013. Lashmi Pooja or worship of the Goddess of wealth will be held at 4:30pm. The Diwali celebrations will end at 8:30pm with a stunning display of fabulous fireworks. The fun and fiesta will be augmented by the provision of free sparklers to children.
