DIVE, a new Australian rock musical by Australian musical theatre writer and composer Xavier Brouwer, will premiere at Open Stage Theatre this July.

DIVE centers on lives of a group of disadvantaged Australians living in a rooming house. The rock musical was inspired by Xavier's time as a Public Servant at the Department of Human Services, where he encountered a number of stories relating to disadvantaged people in Australia.The narrative for DIVE then came together after Xavier embarked on further research and added additional characters and stories from the media, one-on-one interviews and biographical sources.

The central idea of DIVE was to have a range of different characters living together in a run-down rooming house or "dive" in the Australian vernacular. This dilapidated 'home' would become a refuge from the outside world for each of the disadvantaged characters and would also force them to become a make-shift family.

Xavier sees DIVE as a theatrical experiment, as its gritty, realistic setting does not lend itself to the traditional song-and-dance musical style. In turn the rock musical attempts to play with character archetypes and experiment with dramatic structure, by interweaving the narratives of multiple characters in a singular and cohesive storyline set over 24 hours.

The aim of DIVE is to remind middle Australia that not everyone is so lucky in the 'lucky' country. Xavier also decided to add multi-ethnic characters in order to more accurately reflect the true diversity of modern Australian society.

The premiere production of DIVE is directed by Wolf Heidecker.

The cast includes Aaron Allen, Jo Armstrong, Lucinda Barratt, Aparna Bhattacharjee, Otis Binnie, Cory Corbett, Joshua Erwin Ongso, Nina Nicols and Giovanni Piccolo.
