What's better than watching a movie in an air-conditioned cinema in the heat of summer?

Watching a movie in a pool, of course.

Try a different film experience this January with popping up in Sydney's west and, a bit further afield, in the Kiama region.

Here's what's screening in January at:-

Merrylands Swimming Centre – 17 Burnett St, Merrylands

Disney's 3D computer-animated musical adventure Moana will have you beating the heat when the main pool is transformed into a floating cinema lounge on 19 January. The film centres on Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a Polynesian village chief, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. However, when a terrible curse by the Demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, Moana sets sail to search for the legendary Demigod in the hope of returning the heart of Te Fiti and saving her people in the process.

There's a lot more to it with the likes of a volcanic demon, a secret cave and hidden ships, a typhoon and coconut-armoured pirates. Released in 2016, it stars Auli'i Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Demigod Maui, Rachel House as Tala (Moana's paternal grandmother) and Temuera Morrison as Tui (Moana's overprotective father).

This summer fun includes plenty of inflatables, noodles and floaties for guests or, if you prefer to, you can bring your own favourite floating devices.

From 7.30pm-10.30pm, float along whilst singing the tunes of this water flick and should you not want to get wet, you can relax poolside in the available pool chairs.

This dive-in movie is part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the swimming centre and the Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club. It is a free event but registration is required via Eventbrite prior to attendance. Children 17years and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

A BBQ will keep your hunger at bay with sausage sandwiches, steak sandwiches and chicken. The centre's kiosk will also be open selling other foods, ice creams and drinks.

Riverstone Swimming Centre – 26 Market St, Riverstone

The Jungle Bunch is playing on 12 January at this swimming centre with the plot seeing a penguin (raised by tigers) defending the jungle from an evil koala and an army of baboons, along with some help from his friends.

This computer-animated fantasy adventure, running for 90minutes, is voiced by French men as it was first released in France in 2017. Australia saw it in theatres in 2018. Tickets to see it are $10 per adult and $5 per child (5-16yrs), with under 5's free. Payment is at the event on entry. Gates open at 7.30pm and the movie starts at 8.15pm.

The kiosk will be open with pies, sausage rolls, hotdogs, coffee, slushies and ice creams available to purchase.

You will need to bring your own inflatables for this one.

Mount Druitt Swimming Centre – 7 Mount St, Mt Druitt

Bring your floating pool toys along on 19 January for a screening of Sherlock Gnomes, which has Gnomeo and Juliet looking to the legendary detective (voiced by Johnny Depp) to solve the case of their disappearing garden friends.

Released here in 2018, it's a combination of mystery, comedy, fantasy and romance in its 3D computer-animated format.

Gate times and ticket prices are as per Riverstone Swimming Centre above, with both being run by Blacktown City Council. Again, payment is at the gate on entry.

The kiosk here will also be selling pies, sausage rolls & hotdogs, amongst drinks and other items.

Jamberoo Recreation Centre – 1215 Jamberoo Rd, Jamberoo

Pick your Saturday in January as there's a few movies to choose from. They include Early Man (about a cave man and his tribe facing a grave threat to their existence) on 12 January, the amusing sleuth Sherlock Gnomes (in addition to Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt and Michael Caine also lend their voices to this film) on 19 January and Tad – Secret of King Midas (an awkward explorer on a rescue mission of his beloved Sara) screening on 26 January.

Each film commences at 6pm and finishes around 7.30pm. They're free with any entry admission paid, so make a day of it or a weekend away and head to this water theme park for thrills and action aplenty before chilling out on a floating tube or sun lounge at Outback Bay to watch your favourite flick.

If you're feeling a little hungry prior to or during the movie, then Bombora Seafood have you covered with everything from fish and chips to burgers, popcorn and choc-tops, plus drinks. Bombora Scoop Candy Bar will also be open. After all, a candy bar and movies go hand in hand.
