Now in the sixth year,
Brisbane's Wonderland Festival celebrates diversity with 30 spectacular events including comedy, burlesque, circus, music, and magic.
No doubt for me, the absolute star of the festival was Emily Burke, a Tasmanian born and Queensland trained soprano. In
Diva , Emily took the audience on a journey through some of the highlights of her life. Emily describes herself as a mother, opera singer, lover of wine and Cherry Ripes (in that order); with that descriptor, Emily suggests and then delivers an eclectic performance filled with fun and tenderness.
Just a few minutes into the performance I felt the back of my neck tingle; a sensation that was to return multiple times throughout the evening. Emily's voice was amazing, her cheekiness was infectious and joy reverberated throughout the audience.
The only disconcerting moments of the evening was when the crowd, filled with other opera singers, was encouraged to sing along to Dolly Parton's
Jolene. With a soprano on my right and an alto on my left, I can assure you I was duly intimidated and appropriately mouthed the words; shamelessly faking hardy audience participation.
This was one of those shows that came to an end all too quickly. At the end of the performance, I sat in my chair waiting for an encore that sadly never came. I could have happily sat and listened to this truly gorgeous lady for hours.
