It was only recently that I started to hear the term 'Steak Night' from my work colleagues. I found out some pubs do special prices for steak on certain nights, but still often totalling to $20 with a drink.
So I was amazed to hear that District 5 Bistro was offering $12 steaks as a permanent menu item. Who needs to wait for one day of the week with this as an option?
You'll find this gem in Ascot Vale on an unassuming corner of Mount Alexander Rd. We dropped by on a Tuesday night, which we were told would be quiet, but there was a decent amount of tables in for a quality cheap meal.
The kitchen is small so the menu is short and sweet. I'd be interested to try the vegetarian lasagne next time but the steak was filling enough! For $12 you get a 300g porterhouse steak, chips and salad.
James, the new owner, chatted to us about these competitive prices and said it was all about involving the customer. By cutting back on things like table service, it keeps the customer involved and interacting with the staff, but also allows the cheaper prices, as seen on their menu below.
The bistro also has events on such as live bands and the night we visited, there was some wine tasting. It was also great to see some regulars coming in and out for a bite and telling James when they would be back.
There's also a little courtyard and beer garden area if you prefer the outdoors or you want to book a function.
James has lived in both Vietnam and the USA, with experience in the industry, so he knows what he's doing. It's great that he now wants to bring some liveliness to this little corner of Ascot Vale and so far, it seems to be working!
