At the beginning of the Christmas season, I visited District 3 Hornsby ready to try out its Combo Deal 2 pass, which entitles the holder to two laser tag games, two dodgem car rides and a single bungee run for $29.90 (other deals are also available, while you can pay for sessions on each activity individually too). While I've tried dodgem cars before, the other two were a mystery to me and I was pretty eager to see what they were all about.

Laser Tag
Immediately after my companions and I arrived--it was a family affair and I was with my three younger sisters--we headed into the first laser tag session of the day, which takes place in a two -storey arena. It's almost like a maze inside, with plenty of stuff to hide behind and three bases to locate.

The game is simple enough: protect your own team's base while destroying the other two. Being the beginning of the summer school holidays, District 3 was offering another deal for unlimited dodgem cars and laser tag for two hours and two other groups had taken it up on the day I visited, so my sisters and I had plenty of opponents.

Having expected to get shot a lot while trying to figure out what to do, I enjoyed laser tag more than I thought I would. It doesn't take long at all to pick up and all the exploring, locating bases and just shooting everyone I saw was heaps of fun. If you're competitive enough, you can play the game for points, which are revealed on a screen outside the arena once you've finished.

I found that a single laser tag session felt like plenty of time, but I was still glad my sisters and I had a pass for two games. The second time round, our approach was more planned; sometimes guarding our base, sometimes heading off to destroy others. I think laser tag is a game that could be played over and over again, without getting repetitive, as you try and perfect your strategy.

Dodgem Cars
After the laser tag we moved on to the dodgem cars and for an entertainment centre located in a shopping mall, District 3's dodgem car area is a pretty decent size, with two of the morning's groups able to have a turn at once (that was around ten people). With so many cars, it was hard to avoid being hit and I was quickly reminded just how hard the jolts can be.

I have to admit, during my time on the dodgem cars I spent as much time happily doing smooth laps around the track as I did actually trying to hit people, though of course I did target my sisters a few times, but that was mainly to get them back for the jolts I received when they got me. However with all the people in the arena these jolts often caused traffic jams, when the cars were spun around the wrong way and the drivers had to figure out how to reverse out of the situation.

Bungee Run
The bungee run was the last thing we got to try and one session of this activity equates to five minutes of runs. If you've never tried a bungee run before, it involves being tied to a bungee cord and attempting to run as far as you can along the inflatable lane, placing a pouch on the velcro beside you to mark how far you get, before the cord snaps you backwards. Often I found myself actually thrown back, and I ended up flat on my back more than once.

This activity was another I enjoyed far more than I expected, since I'm not a fan of strenuous activity and have next to no strength in my legs. Yet I think I surprised everyone by getting further than my sister on my first run, even if she then upped the ante and left me behind afterwards.

I never really managed to get any further than I did on that run and ended up with a cluster of pouches around the same place (for those interested, it was around the 13 mark), but it was both fun and challenging at the same time (and something I definitely felt in my legs the day after). Apparently, people have made it all the way to the end, which I would have liked to see.

And more...
Not included in District 3's Combo Deals, but also available at the centre are a whole range of arcade games. There's also party deals suited to both kids and adults, which all come with pizzas and a laser tag game, with the rest tailored to your needs. A brochure on these can be found here
