The State Library of Queensland is hosting a series of exhibitions and events entitled Distant Lines: Queensland Voices of the First World War which explores the unique Queensland experience before, during and after World War I. The exhibitions and events begin on 4th April and many continue until November 2015 while others occur only for a day or a short period of time.

There will be a series of smaller displays throughout the library designed to "connect us with the intimate and untold stories of Queenslanders as we commemorate 100 years since the First World War". More than 57,700 Queenslanders served the country in the war and this group of exhibitions will reflect on how this period of our history affected Queenslanders and shaped our history.

The Program of Events includes eight exhibitions throughout the gallery.
Highlights include:

Distant Lines in the SLQ Gallery

This exhibition will use personal letters, diaries, belongings and digital stories to explore the experiences of 25 Queenslanders who served in WWI.

Distant Lines in Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery

This exhibition will use posters, photographs, records, letters and programmes to explore the early stages of the war from recruitment and conscription to patriotism, racism, censorship and propaganda. A highlight of this display will be the contribution that women made as fundraisers, Red Cross volunteers and medical personnel.

Distant Lines in Infozone

This exhibition draws on imagery from the two referenda held in 1917 and 1917 respectively and addresses the age old discussion for or against war.

Other exhibitions in other parts of the gallery include:

Postcards to a Loved One
Talbot Family Treasures Wall
Emotional Frontiers
War and Peace: Distant Opening Lines Opening Event on the eleventh of April. See my other article with more detail about this event.
