Spring is a season of growth and change, making it the perfect time to launch a festival dedicated to new ways of thinking. At the on the weekend of 31 October there will be plenty of opportunities to explore, discuss and debate topics that may affect our daily lives as well as our future.

Held at the State Library in association with writingWA , the festival features a program of speakers, music and films on a variety of issues, with most sessions free and others low-cost. Speakers include writers, artists, scientists, politicians and other thought leaders from around Australia and the world.

Though all sessions are separate, there are a number of themes underpinning the event. Technology and the way it shapes our lives is considered as a tool for social change and new opportunities, but cyber safety is also discussed. The changing face of cities is illustrated with both dramatic and everyday examples: the Christchurch earthquake and rebuilding and the "transition movement" idea that local communities have the power to change the world. There are also sessions on more confrontational subjects including slavery, government surveillance and detention centres.

Other speakers will discuss language and writing, the future of books and copyright, including the trademarking of colours and patenting genetic material. These and other subjects should make for an interesting and challenging weekend.

The full program is available at the website and tickets may be purchased from Eventbrite . Note that some free events require booking so be sure to check individual session details. All Disrupted events take place at the State Library of Western Australia.
