Disney's Aladdin – The Musical

If you long to see a Broadway musical theatre blockbuster, if you are into razzmatazz and glitz and "less is more" is a concept you would never associate with a live performance, then this show is for you.

Disney theatrical productions have brought their wildly successful Broadway hit, the production of Aladdin to QPAC, using some of our Australian homegrown talent. Aladdin now has a global footprint in Brisbane and Melbourne and includes productions in Tokyo, Hamburg, London and across North America.

Given its global success, this has been a much-anticipated show for Brisbane audiences. To a packed theatre, this first-night production was flawless in its execution and received not one, but two standing ovations.

So what was good about it? For me, the staging and dance were particular standouts. Bob Crowley, who created the glittering concoction of stage sets, brought this craft to a whole new level. Aladdin's cave was as wondrous as any child could imagine - a fictional wonderland of dazzling jewels and gold.

The magic carpet rose and glided gracefully against a backdrop of a luminous supermoon and the staging of the market cleverly reflected the fun-loving nature of the characters by having playfully moving and changing buildings. Around these delightful designs, the dancers artfully performed somersaults and skillfully showcased many dance genres.

Casey Nicholaw, both director and choreographer, blended the staging and dance beautifully. In particular, the choreography cleverly told the story as much as the music and singing. Such is the excellence we seek in musical theatre.

The principal characters were, of course, Aladdin (Ainslie Melham), Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) and the Genie (Gareth Jacobs). The role for the Genie was writ large in this Disney performance, hence there was a tendency for this character to steal the show. However, the role of Aladdin was capably performed by Melham, with impeccable stage presence and a fine voice. He was joined by his merry band of friends, Babkak (Troy Sussman), Omar (Robert Tripolino) and Kassim (Adam-Jon Fiorentino), who blended well musically and their comic element created chemistry between the four amigos role.

All characters sang and danced their hearts out in this production, but it has to be said that the most impact was created by the Genie. The playful camped-up rendition of the Genie character was artfully acted and sung by Gareth Jacobs, whose over the top interpretation is exactly what Disney ordered and had the audience eating out of his magical hands.

In summary, if these production images open up an Aladdin's cave of spectacle, glamour and excitement for you, then this QPAC show will not disappoint. Expect to be entertained and dazzled and, if the audience on opening night is anything to go by, feel free to wear your bling and do a bit of dazzling yourself!
