Disney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody - Adelaide Fringe Review 2021
Overall rating: & #9733
How many Disney puns can you sing in one show? A bit more than Dumbo
and a bit less than a Pumpkin carriage! Perth performing group The Hairy Godmothers
want to take you on a Magic Carpet Ride through parodies of your favourite Disney songs (classics only
) in Disney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody
. That's enough (poor) play on words for me; I can't give you a Happy Ever After like this show can.
The eight drag artists perform original parodies from Disney beloveds Beauty and the Beast
and Little Mermaid
to name a few. From the opening number, strong vocals and crude lyrics set up a unique drag show for fans of childhood nostalgia. No lip-syncing here!
Disney in Drag
follows our young hero on a journey to find love. Glass slipper in hand, they search for their princess, prince or non-binary majesty. In stunning pink from head to toe, the delightful Hairy Godmother is there, always with a beer, to guide our hero.
Our naïve hero comes to learn more than they bargained for about adult toys, pegging and genitalia. Along the way, cherished Disney figures sing about online dating and toxic masculinity, and a few lucky audience members are invited to join the raunchy fun on stage. It may not be the Disney theme park of your childhood dreams, but it is the closest many of us can get to these adored characters at the moment.
The gender-bending collective play with fairytale tropes to arrive at morals that some insightful audience members catch on to before their reveal. The audience's investment in the story is a sign of a good plot that audiences can follow in between all the creative, silly parodies. The performers show strong improv abilities while interacting with each other and the audience. The use of props, makeup and costume further enhance the magic.
Disney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody is the Disney dream
you (never) imagined come true. For adult Disney fans, many who have already shaken their fairytale naivety, this is the show to embrace your X-rated Disney fantasies.
