Exploring Ronda: Where History Meets Nature
Upon arrival in Ronda, we were immediately struck by its unique location, perched on the edge of a deep, narrow gorge. The El Tajo gorge, carved out by the Guadalevín River, divides the city into two distinct halves—the old town, with its Moorish roots, and the newer town, dating back to the 15th century.
Our first stop was the Puente Nuevo, the iconic stone bridge that spans the gorge, connecting the old and new towns. Standing on this bridge, with the sheer drop below and the sweeping views of the valley beyond, was nothing short of exhilarating. The blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity left us awestruck.
Ronda's Plaza de Toros
Wandering through the new town, we made our way to the Plaza de Toros, Ronda’s legendary 18th-century bullring. This historic site, one of the oldest and most revered in Spain, offers a glimpse into the country’s deep-rooted traditions. Even if you’re not a fan of bullfighting, the architecture and history of this place are undeniably fascinating.
Ronda is a treasure trove of historical and architectural wonders. From the ancient Arabic baths to the beautifully preserved Casa de Don Bosco, each landmark tells a story of the city’s rich and varied past. The Cathedral, with its stunning mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles, and the numerous bridges that span the gorge, add to Ronda’s charm and make it a truly unique Andalusian city.

Lunch with a View: Dining at Parador Nacional de Ronda
As the morning turned to afternoon, we headed to the Parador Nacional de Ronda for lunch. This historic hotel, perched on the edge of the gorge, offers some of the most spectacular views in all of Spain. Dining on the terrace, with the valley stretching out before us, was an experience to savour.
The food, a delightful mix of local Andalusian flavours, was almost as impressive as the scenery. Each bite was enhanced by the breathtaking backdrop.
