
Township of Rainbow
Rainbow is a very special country town situated on the edge of the Big Desert and the Mallee wilderness regions. Located 405 km north-west of Melbourne via Ballarat and Horsham, it is also known as "the gateway to the Mallee".

The town was named after a property in the area called "Rainbow Rise" which was located near a crescent-shaped ridge and in spring, the area was covered with beautiful multicoloured wildflowers. When the town was proclaimed in 1900, the name was shortened to "Rainbow".

This special town is notable for its unique main street which has a beautiful parkland right in the middle of the street. The parkland with beautiful green lush lawns has picnic tables, chairs, and sheltered BBQ areas.

The parkland is also a memorial to all who served in the great war.

Beautiful historic buildings line the street. There are two hotels, a post office, a bakery, a modern supermarket, an art gallery and others.

The town is also noted for its impressive murals. There are a total of 23 murals - 16 are found on the main street itself.

Not far from the town is a locality called Albacutya, which has one of Victoria's latest silo art.
