Everything you want out of Asia in the one place
If you want to get away from the everyday travel routes of Indonesia, then make your way to Sumatra - tourists are heading there, but not in the droves you'll find them in places like the Gili Islands or Bali.

Bukittinggi Square
A town like no other

Get yourself a really cheap flight out of Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia for about $50 AUD - GvW went in August - being so near the equator, Padang is hot! Bukittinggi is a really nice two hour drive from Padang, there are buses you can take or even book a driver - GvW booked her travel through Roni's tours who will come straight to your Padang hotel, pick you up for about another $50 AUD and drop you directly at your Bukittinggi hotel.

As soon as you drive through the rock flanked entryway to Bukittinggi, you know you're in for a treat.

Architecture here is a true mix of the Dutch colonial times and traditional Indonesian - GvW stayed at the Benteng Hotel, booked through (no fees & great cancellation terms - generally fee free). If you love waking up to the start of the Indonesian day with the call to mosque and views of volcanos then, this city is for you - and the back of this traditional hotel is too.

A pleasant climate, amazing scenery every way you go, paddy fields surround the whole town. Take a bike and head out of town - buy some real Kopi Luwak, climb up Mount Marapi (a 13 hour walking trip!)
