The name of this place is intriguing and gets you wondering what delights and temptations await inside. Indeed, many temptations await, from the heritage and vintage items on offer to the delightful little tea salon inside the antiques market. The market section is at the rear of the old council building, with the emporium at the front on the main street. Potted plants are sold in between in the courtyard. But it was the tea salon that we were looking for after a recent morning visit to the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame.
This delightful, brick-walled room offers traditional high tea and coffee and cakes as well as a blackboard menu of enticing gourmet sandwiches and toasties. We chose the classic high tea from one of three choices, the other date and lavender. The bottom of the three tiered tray had chicken pinwheel sandwiches, mini savoury tarts and a mushroom terrine, the next layer the classic scone with jam and cream and the top, a mini white chocolate tart, a brownie and a rose panacotta in a small antique china cup. All treats were fresh and scrumptious!
The tea was served in a beautiful silverware tea pot and fine china, as you'd expect given the setting. There is a menu of loose-leafed teas from the local Highlands Tea company. I went for the 'Mad Hatter's Blend', described as 'an Assam black tea with golden flowery Orange Pekoe'.
Afterwards, feeling refreshed and refuelled, we were ready to scour the sixty or more market stalls for vintage and antique gems and to walk along the main street of Bowral to other antique and homeware stores. What better way to spend an afternoon in the beautiful Southern Highlands?
