After what seems like forever, the beautiful, gigantic doors of Dirty Janes in Canberra are wide open and welcoming lovers of vintage and handmade. Step through them and you'll find yourself inside a vintage and handmade lovers paradise of epic proportions.
I knew it would be good but nothing quite prepared me for the sheer scale and range of weird, wacky and wonderful things on offer. From the second I stepped inside, I was living a treasure hunter's fantasy - anything I could imagine might be just around the corner on the next stall. Or just behind that coal scuttle, or over there under the lobster pot.
As I wandered through the labyrinth of stalls, I was more and more amazed at what was on offer. Whether you are a lover of shabby chic, retro glam, farmhouse luxe or anything in between, you'll find a stall at Dirty Janes to make your heart sing.
If you're Jane-curious, here is an idea of what to expect: the majority of stalls are vintage items and much of this is décor, kitchenware, furniture and the like. There are some books, gardening tools and clothes in the vintage mix too. Then there are the handmade and crafted stalls - don't imagine a scarf knitted by nanna though, think more on the scale of upcycled furniture, handmade tables, amazing pottery and taxidermy art and you're on track for the type of thing you might find. As well as that, I found some original art and jewellery stores scatted into the mix and a couple of flower carts with local blooms just begging to go home.
Every single stall at Dirty Janes is beautifully curated and styled so it's like visiting 90 tiny individual shopfronts. To pick a favourite stand would be like choosing a favourite child, you just can't do it. Each one has their own likeability and each one deserves your attention although some scream 'look at me' a little louder than others. I found myself lingering around a few stalls longer than others but I can honestly say there was fun, joy and surprises wherever I turned.
Once you bag your treasures, if the exhaustion and excitement is all a little too much, the on-site café, Billy Ts is ready and waiting with seating in a vast space with the most amazing light shades I've ever seen. Billy Ts serves a range of snacks, pastries and hot food and a stop here will let you reflect on what you've just seen (and maybe decide that yes, you really do need that bunch of feathers, the vintage trophies and the communist propaganda poster).
At Dirty Janes, you're guaranteed to find something amazing and almost certain to take home at least one thing you never knew you just HAD to have. Best of all, you will be immersed in an amazing, quirky world for just a little while making a visit well worth it.
