Dirty Deeds - AC/DC Tribute Show

Mention the words "Dirty Deeds" and you might start thinking about movies. Forget about the 2002 film on the late 1960s Australian mobster or the 2005 American Pie-like teen comedy of the same name. We're talking about one of the best AC/DC tribute bands in Australia who deliver the closest thing to the real Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Famers concert.

Based in Sydney , Dirty Deeds is different from your standard originals band in that they are solely a tribute act and they been at it for close to 20 years. So good at their craft that the audience believes they are actually at an AC/DC concert every time. It also helps that Dirty Deeds has a hardcore fan base who follows the band religiously and demands the maximum AC/DC night after night. The 5-member band doesn't "tour" in the traditional sense but are on the road for weeks at a time, performing on most weekends in tickets and free shows around NSW and also interstate for festivals and corporate functions.

The longest serving members in Dirty Deeds at the moment is Dylan Hartas, the rhythm guitarist and Michael Ward on drums. Dylan's been playing music since age 10 and also has a solo career as a singer songwriter outside the band. Michael, who started on music from 8 years of age is also the band manager and instrumental in building Dirty Deeds into the number one AC/DC Tribute Show in the country. Between Dylan and Michael, they delivered over 500 shows in 8 years.

A medical instrument technician during the week, Mike Sheehan has been on bass guitar for 4 years. AC/DC's solo guitarist 'Angus Young' is played by Mick Pelligrini, a seasoned musician who drinks lots of milk and loves fishing. Pressure from his girlfriend helped the final band member, Chad Towns. to get the gig as the lead singer. The professional truck driver sang one song after being forced to ask, rocked the audience, embarrassed the band's singer so much that he quit, and Dirty Deeds took Chad in full time. It also helped that Chad is the same height as AC/DC's Bon Scott and has his style and mannerisms down to a tee.

I caught up with Michael Ward and Chad Towns in an interview to find out what makes them tick, and like any good investigative host in a suit on a really late late night show, uncover the secrets that keep their "alternating current" and "direct current" flowing night after night.

What made you guys decide to get into a band?

Michael: Being ridiculously talented with the drum sticks at an early age.

Chad: Wanted to as a kid but was told I couldn't sing and lived too far out of town to learn an instrument. Then years later I went to a karaoke one night with some mates at 39 years of age and was told otherwise!

So what did mum and dad say when each of you broke the "band" news to them?

Michael: You have to finish primary school first.

Chad: Oh! really? what do you do? I said lead vocal mum! Mum said WHAT! you did always want to learn an instrument didn't you?

Were you guys involved in a tribute band from day one?

Michael: No I've been a professional Muso in original bands for 20 years before joining Dirty Deeds.

Chad: I didn't care. I just wanted to join a band. ended up here and it has worked well!

Why did you guys choose to join Dirty Deeds?

Michael: I was asked to join by my friend who was already in Dirty Deeds when their drummer quit the group, what a goose! Also because Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution.

Chad: Cause Bon Scott rules, and I can do it! So I'm told!

What inspired your 2014 tour?

Michael: The same thing that inspires every tour, having no money.

Chad: More places to see that I've never been to (I hope) and hanging out with a great bunch of talented guys that play hot and loud and let me sing with a gut full of JD!

What can your fans and audience expect from you guys in 2014?

Michael: The most authentic AC/DC experience with a tribute act that uses all the same equipment and gear as AC/DC did in the 70's and know how to play it correctly. We have great club and pub shows and our harbour cruises are being very well received as something different for our hardened fans. We've played some great festivals also and always love the interstate work we get from time to time.

Chad: AC/DC BON STYLE!

What's the future like for your guys?

Michael: 2015

Chad: Wanna do overseas, but till there's more money in it, I'll keep working my arse off driving a truck I suppose.

Dirty Deeds will be satisfying AC/DC fans for the rest of 2014 through to 2015 around NSW including Kareela Golf Club, Catho Pub, Sydney Harbour Cruise, Wenty Leagues Club, Collaroy Beach Services Club, Culburra Bowling Club, Halekulani Bowling Club and Lone Pine Tavern. Check out the gig guide to catch their high voltage performance.
