Most kids go through a dinosaur phase where they eat, sleep and breath raptors and tyrannosaurs.
They also drive their parents nuts asking how to pronounce names such as eomamenchisaurus or tehuelchesaurus which soon tests parent's dinosaur education.
You would think kids would just see these huge creatures as big and scary but on the contrary, they adore them. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they resemble dragons and some kids go through a fixture on dragon phase as well.
Or perhaps it is because dinosaurs are safely extinct. They can see drawings and pictures of what they looked like but the creatures just aren't around anymore, so they feel safe being obsessed with something that huge which, in reality, can't get at them. (Never show them
Jurassic Park while they are too young. )
[ADVERT]Parents usually like their kids' obsession over dinosaurs. It is probably the first science their kids take an interest in and it can be an entree into children reading their first non-fiction books.
It is also a pretty easy addiction to feed as there is a host of toys and books about dinosaurs on the market. But it is pretty hard to organise an excursion beyond the museum and then the dinosaurs normally don't move.
However a change is afoot - and its a bloody big foot.
Erth's will be performing at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
This is a petting zoo with a difference, as the creatures are actually dinosaurs. Just so you don't get scared, the dinosaurs are puppets, but they are realistic and brought to life through a sophisticated combination of design, electronics and theatrical talent.
These amazing creatures were developed in consultation with palaeontologists, based on dinosaur fossil evidence that is around.
They include the carnivore Australovenator, the mighty long-necked Titanosaur, whose relatives were some of the heaviest creatures to ever walk the Earth, some cute baby dinosaurs, and the big-eyed Leaellynasauras.
This is an interactive theatre experience with opportunities to touch and feed the dinosaurs, but just as in any zoo, don't expect the creatures to be totally predictable.
This show is about the closest you can get to watching real dinosaurs.
There are also a few gimmick that the kids are going to adore. One is that you can pre-order them a lunch box which has sandwiches (carnivore or otherwise), juice, fruit, and a tub of dinosaur lollies.
This 50 minute show is recommended for children 5 and up but should be helpful for your own dinosaur education.
