Quaint, peaceful, quiet, tranquil - such adjectives appropriately signify the Nan Tien temple. The beautifully designed garden perfectly complements this Buddhist shrine. The greenery blankets the idols, pagoda and the main temple in a holy shroud that makes one want to come back again and again.

Lunching in the dining hall at this Buddhist shrine adds to the wonderful experience. With a capacity to seat 200 diners and managed by nuns, the hall is bathed in sunlight coming through huge windows and oozes the same auspicious spirit as the rest of the temple premises. The food (nothing funky and totally vegetarian) gives one a taste of the simplicity of monastic subsistence. Prepared by some expert chefs, the meals are nutritious, fulfilling and tasty.

When we made our way to the dining hall, a queue had already started to form. Priced at only $9, the menu was a delight containing a lightly stir-fried soy and veggie mix, roasted bok choy, egg-plant tempura, a spring roll, baked squash and a choice of plain jasmine rice or noodles. By the time we savored the last morsel, our tummies were as equally happy as our minds.

If there is still some space left in your stomach, then you can always make a beeline to Dew Drop Inn for some great tasting herbal tea.
