I don't know any hotel that doesn't have a story to relate about its history; as history is what builds the blocks our ancestors started making years ago. Even if the hotel is brand new, the land it is built on was used for something else in the first place.



The Grand Hotel in Mt Morgan is the only brick hotel building of its kind in the town and at the time of its construction in 1901, it was quoted as being a first class hotel for families, visitors, tourists and commercial gentlemen.

The land on which the Grand Hotel was to be constructed was originally part of the huge portion 247 of 640 acres, acquired in 1883 by members of the Mount Morgan Mine syndicate. It was subdivided in 1895. In September 1900 a lease on sub 1 of section 6 at the corner of Morgan and Central Streets was acquired by Richard Daniel Shaw. The Grand Hotel was probably constructed for Shaw in 1901; however it was being run by Ernest Bale, a hotelier from Rockhampton. The hotel has passed through many owners, each one adding to its charm and preserving its significance.

The hotel is situated on the corner of Morgan and Central Streets and to this day retains its double storey which includes the corner tower. The downstairs area consists of a well-stocked bar and dining room with accommodation upstairs. The accommodation rooms have been recently refurbished, two now having double beds.



Sunday's often sees the influx of social groups from outer town for lunch and dinner and the time my friends and I stayed there, a large group of car enthusiasts filled the dining room with hungry mouths and conversation to share.



New managers Teneille and David have created a much sought after venue with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Locals are eager to introduce themselves to visitors and enjoy sharing a drink with you around the bar. Ladies are invited to partake in get-togethers on Friday and Saturday evenings as special events are catered. A bottle shop is attached to cater for all your requirements.



The dining area has also been recently refurbished with the capacity of holding 60 patrons. Between my friends and I; we tried almost every meal on the menu for lunch and dinner over our four-day stay and couldn't fault the chef with his excellent cuisine. Steak, Risotto, Roasted Pork Belly, Calamari and the man size Chicken Parmigiana are only a few on their delicious menu. $5-small and $10-large Pizza's are the specials for Monday evenings with the very large pizza certainly a bargain at $10. Service was prompt and it is a good indication when you see tables of locals also enjoying evening meals.



The Grand, by name and patron experience from the hospitality given, still stands today with the magnitude to impress locals and tourists alike.
