China, England, France, India, Italy Japan, Mexico, Nepal and Thailand. Fancy a meal from those countries. No need to buy an around the world air ticket, just walk around Lilydale.

In keeping with Australia's cosmopolitan status, Lilydale boasts cuisines from nine countries.

Never having eaten in the countries mentioned, I can't vouch for the authenticity of their fare but their menus look and sound appetising.
To avoid an international incident I am mentioning them in alphabetical order.

China. There are two Chinese restaurants in Lilydale, both in Clarke Street, next door to each other. They are Oriental Paradise and Tian Tian.

Both are quite large, seating wise, but most of their business seems to be take away, a service of which I regularly avail myself of. I can particularly recommend the duck and Chinese mushroom soup from Tian Tian.

England. A strange choice you may think, but fish and chips are a traditional English dish dating back to the 1860s. There are two fish & chipperies, both in Main Street, only a few doors from each other. They are Captain K's and Yarra Valley Fish and Chips, both in Main Street near the station.

France. L'Auberge. I believe that is the French word for an inn or restaurant. 42 Castella Street, situated in a former church.

India. There are two Indian restaurants in Main Street. Savera at 238 Main Street and Royal Time at 260 Main Street.

I have dined at Savera many times and have no complaints about the service, food or cost.

Italy. La Porchetta at 315 Main Street is a very popular eating place in Lilydale with upstairs and downstairs eating areas.

Japan. The Isshim Japanese restaurant at 208 Main Street is almost hidden away, next to the Olinda Creek. A feature of this restaurant is their 'all you can eat' offer at a set price.

Mexico. Taco Bills is a popular Mexican chain of restaurants. The Lilydale venue is at 190 Main Street, next to the Olinda Creek.

Nepal. Nepalese cuisine is on the menu of the Savera Indian restaurant. Indian and Nepal share borders, so why shouldn't they share menus.

Thailand. Thai restaurants are becoming very popular in Australia and Lilydale boasts two of the best. EnTHAIced is at 20-22 Castella Street.

Imm Oon is situated at 133-139 Main Street and has recently added an outdoor eating area.

Of the 13 restaurants mentioned in this article, I have personally eaten at or had take away at nine of them. Part of my research for this article was to view reviews on the internet to gauge other people's experiences. Most restaurants had one poor review, but the overwhelming majority were at the top end of the scale.

Try them all, it may entice you to visit one of the countries.
