Rest easy disillusioned Port Power fans. Channel your cheers Adelaide Crows faithfuls. The South Australian local competition has enough spills, athletic dare and nail bitting grip to sustain your muster.
Not being from Adelaide I was most surprised to be spending Saturday afternoons basking in the warm afterglow of another Glenelg victory. I even considered morphing into a black and gold banded football nut by purchasing my first season ticket (and a modest flag). I was unashamedly hooked on footy.
The modern game appeals to Mum, Dad, Gran, Thomas, Lilly and Barney the Bear (dressed as your favourite full forward). Most ovals set aside family zones for the littlies and everyone can have a go with The Sherrin at half time. Now you don't get that at the cricket.
Steak sandwiches never tasted so good from the ladies in blue (hair mostly) toiling in the galvanised hut at the back of the oval. Chase this down with a tinny from the other hut next door. We defected to the contemporary fare sold by the netball fund raisers but alas the ladies in blue had our culinary measure.
