It's a fact: Canberrans love food. And the ever-growing number of new places to feast in our city is a testament to that.

From award-winning fine dining restaurants and breakfast cafes to pubs, street-style food, high teas, cocktail bars, family friendly restaurants, pizzerias, wineries, and cheap eats, we are certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to food in Canberra.

I love places where not only the food and service are excellent (in my humble opinion), but also where the whole experience is different, unusual, somewhat quirky and something that I've never tried before. Here are 8 different foodie experiences for you to try this weekend:

1. A Burger High Tea at Beef & Barley, Kingston Foreshore.
When you think of high teas, you usually think of elegant three-tiered platters piled with a delicate assortment of dainty sandwiches, pastries and cakes. Well, there's nothing dainty about the Burger High Tea at Beef & Barley! This is high tea with generous servings of beer battered chips, popcorn chicken, house slaw, and beef and pork sliders. Available Tues-Sun from 11.30 am till late. $40pp includes a glass of bubbly or a schooner of draught beer with an extra $20pp for bottomless draught beer or bubbly. Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free options are available on request. To book go to www.beefandbarley.com.au

2. Boodle Feast, Kusina.
Kusina Filipino restaurant in Weston Creek offers the most unique Filipino dining experience anywhere: the hugely popular Boodle feast, for groups of 4 or more. A Boodle feast involves an arrangement of delicious dishes served on a banana leaf platform surrounding a central mountain of rice. No cutlery is provided so you must eat the traditional Filipino way-with your hands! Boodle feasts are held on the first Sunday of every month. $40 per person. Book your Boodle feast at www.kusina.com.au

3. Merienda Cena at Lolo and Lola Filipino Eatery, Watson.
Another Filipino restaurant, this one located in Watson, offers a monthly Merienda Cena or Filipino afternoon tea. It's a celebration of Philippine flavours, offering both traditional and contemporary treats. If you haven't tried Filipino food before, then this is the perfect introduction. $39 per person. Held on the last Sunday of the month. Bookings essential www.loloandlola.com.au

4. Chinese High Tea at Natural 9, Casino Canberra.
This is high tea with a Chinese twist. Feast on pork and prawn spring rolls, miso roast pumpkin dumplings, jasmine fudge, and a mini white chocolate and yuzu cheesecake amongst other dainty delights. Fridays and Saturdays, 2.30pm-4.30pm. $35 per person, or $45 with a glass of sparkling. Book at www.natural9.com.au

5. Tipsy Tea at White Rabbit Cocktail Room, Northbourne Avenue, Canberra.
Another high tea with a twist, but this time think Alice in Wonderland, the Mad Hatter and cocktails! Enjoy delectable savouries and sweets, and a choice of White Rabbit's signature cocktails. Held every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm-5pm. $65 per person. Bookings essential www.whiterabbitroom.com.au

6. Game of Thrones Winter Feast, hosted by Ginger Catering Events.
If you're a Game of Thrones fan, then you'll love this unique dining experience from the seven kingdoms! On Friday August 10 at the National Arboretum, Ginger Catering will hold a Game of Thrones Winter Feast. Live your Game of Thrones fantasy and feast on a sumptuous three course dinner that includes whole suckling pig, venison pies, dragons eggs, lemon cakes and mulled wine. There'll also be a photo booth and entertainment on the night. Cost is $100 per person. The Winter Feast begins at 6.30pm at the Village Centre. Grab your tickets at http://gingercatering.com.au/game-of-thrones-winter-feast

7. Guild House, Bailey's Corner, Canberra City.
Guild is a restaurant where you can play board games at your table. Munch on your yummy wood fired pizzas and enjoy a cocktail or two as you play Monopoly, checkers, chess, Pandemic, Jenga, Connect 4, and a wide range of games with your family and friends. To find out more, visit guild.house

8. Not your ordinary picnic.
This is without a doubt my favourite foodie experience of all. We are lucky to live here in the Bush Capital where there are forests, nature reserves, parks, and green spaces aplenty. So there are many places to enjoy a picnic. But why not have a picnic with a twist? Think of a theme for your picnic (for example, Alice in Wonderland, Unicorns, Halloween, Fairytales etc), dress up to match your theme, prepare food to match your theme, then find a suitable place to enjoy your picnic. For example, I've found the Himalayan Cedar Forest and the Cork Oak Forest within the National Arboretum to be perfect places for Halloween themed picnics.

Of course, you don't actually need to have a theme and dress up to enjoy a picnic. But it's oh so much more fun if you do! And really, who cares if other people stare at you when they come across you? You're the ones having all the fun, after all!

You can put together your own picnic hamper or you can let someone else do the job for you, such as Schmicnics , which service Lake Burley Griffin and surrounding areas.
