Didi is the 2024 winner of the Sundance US Dramatic Audience and the US Special Jury Award Ensemble Cast. The title,
Didi, means younger brother in Mandarin, and is a film that takes the coming-of-age genre and gives it a modern spin. In 2008, 13-year-old Chris, a Taiwanese boy is in his final summer before high school.
He spends his skater-boy summer navigating friendships, crushes, and the family dynamics that make life complicated. Chris is working to find his place in the world before he starts high school – something that many people can relate to. And, based on the film description, he’s trying to do it right as social media and the idea of constant connection is starting to take off. A time when the world has changed with 9/11, several other terrorist attacks and ongoing war in the Middle East.
It sounds as though identity for people of all ages and stages of life is at the heart of this unique film, extrapolating how the culture of the early 2000s, the role of adolescence and the similarities and differences in our lives can have an impact on what it means to grow up, so it looks to be an interesting film.
Catch it at 6pm on the 29th of November, and you can get a ticket for $30, a concession for $26 or a ticket and drink for $39. Any updates and ticket purchases will be available through
The Sydney Opera House , so keep an eye on this information for any changes or updates. The film is in English and Mandarin, and the event is wheelchair accessible. The film runs for 94 minutes and is classified MA15+.
