Put your best foot forward
Need some motivation to get out of bed and walk to work? How about a free healthy breakfast? Or if that's not enough of an incentive, consider your health and wellbeing. Research of 400,000 people has found that walking just an extra 15 minutes each day can help extend life expectancy by up to three years, while reducing the risk of stroke, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and increasing mental wellbeing.

15 minutes of walking for all those benefits!

The icing on the (sugar free) cake in terms of motivation to start walking is that you can be part of a national initiative. Diabetes Australia and Walk to Work Day have joined forces in a bid to get Australians walking again and to raise vital funds for Diabetes Australia. This national campaign, which is in its 17th year, also helps raise awareness of diabetes prevention.

Diabetes Australia CEO Professor Greg Johnson notes that type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest threats to the health and productivity of all Australians. "Around 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. Walking and other forms of physical activity, combined with healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight is 'just what the doctor ordered' for both the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes."

Walk your way to better health

The campaign concludes with celebrations on Friday 14th November 2014, which marks Diabetes Australia Walk to Work Day and World Diabetes Day.

In Melbourne, there will be four breakfast pit stops in key locations around the city, where you can get your free healthy breakfast, as well as information about health, nutrition and physical activity in a promotional giveaway bag:

- Parliament House

- Southbank Pedestrian Footbridge

- Flinders Street Station, and

- Melbourne Central Station.

How can I get involved?

If you'd like to participate in Walk to Work Day, you can register for FREE. Set yourself a target for the six weeks of the campaign, including at least a 1km walk on Walk to Work Day. Fundraising for Diabetes Australia is optional.

If you're an employer or HR Manager, encourage your workplace to get involved and enter a team. As Pedestrian Council Chairman Harold Scruby highlights, "People who walk before and during work are generally healthier, more productive and creative and are less likely to be absent or take sick leave".

Just 15 minutes of walking each day can boost your health

Can't walk to work but would still like to be involved in the campaign? Think about hosting a healthy breakfast for your friends or work colleagues. Here are some ideas and guidelines to help you plan a healthy breakfast.
