Raising money for Freedom Runners & Save the Children
Desert Runners - Fundraising Screening Flyer
On Monday 2 June, Samantha Gash of Freedom Runners will be hosting a special screening of "Desert Runners" at ACMI to raise awareness and funding to start a social enterprise business in South Africa in collaboration with Save the Children.
This social enterprise will employ a dozen women to make and sell re-usable sanitary pads at a vastly reduced price to help keep girls in school. It will also educate on subjects such as puberty, menstruation, safe sex & HIV.
More information on the project can be found through the Freedom Runners website.
Desert Runners is a documentary which follows Gash's 2010 journey to becoming not only the youngest person to take on the four desert ultra-marathon competition, but also being the first woman to do so.
Samantha Gash - Ultra-marathon Runner
Samantha has since gone on to run an additional 8 ultra-marathons (including a solo one across the Simpson Desert) and now, along with UK runner Mimi Anderson aims to run 2350km across South Africa's Freedom Trail in September & October 2014 to raise money for this amazing cause. To put this into context, this equates to two back-to-back marathons a day for 32 consecutive days.
All ticket sale proceeds from the evening go directly towards the charity and their overall goal of raising $50,000 to set up and run the social enterprise business for 1 year.
Still from Desert Runners Movie
There will be door prizes up for grabs and the ability to hear from some amazing speakers such as Kemi Nekvapil from Kemi's Raw Kitchen & Raw Beauty Queen and the amazing Samantha herself.
