Desert Cave Experience Tour

Upon arriving in Coober Pedy, it seems like such a small town with on one hand, so many things to do and on the other, nothing much apparent above the surface.
It is a town of contrasts and harsh landscapes and if you find your only here for a short time, the easiest way to see everything may well be to take a tour out with an experienced guide.
There are many tours available with most of the accommodations and the tourist information centre.
We chose to book our Desert Cave Tour experience with the Desert Cave Hotel. We found the price to be cheaper than most other locations.
The Desert Cave experience is a half day tour which will bring you in touch with the amazing outback characters of Coober Pedy, whilst awakening you to a lifestyle which is different to anywhere else on earth.
Due to the requests of the tourists, our tour was done in reverse to the usual manner. Hence we started in the town and then made our way further outback.
We visited the Serbian church, one of the world's only underground churches. It was really beautiful and quite fascinating to see how the drills had dug up the roof in round shapes.
We travelled right around the town with our guide, Ned, who told us about the history, including dishing a little bit of dirt on some locals' dirty laundry.
We visited the Umoona Museum and cave; a fascinating underground home - it was a delight to see how comfortable the locals can live underground. Forget the dusty dugouts, these homes had carpets, lights, running water and gorgeous bedrooms.
Need a new bookshelf?
No need to go to IKEA, simply get out your pick and carve one out.
Having a new baby?
Again, just get out the equipment and dig a new bedroom. You may even strike it rich.
Heading out of town we were then taken to an opal field that was not open to the general public.
Although you will not be permitted to exit the bus here, you will be amazed by over two million holes straight down into the ground making up the arid landscape.
Continuing on, you will go to the breakaways and the famous dog fence. If you would like more information on any of these places please look at my other reviews on weekendnotes.com
We arrived back in town dusty, tired and pleasantly satisfied with our amazing outback experience.
