If you happen to be a little off the beaten track in Melbourne and looking for a quick breakfast bite or aperitif before heading into the CBD, Fleur Depot De Pain might be just the ticket.

Located below the funky Art Series Blackman Hotel, Fleur is styled on a local French Patisserie. But you won't see any baking done here. The Depot De Pain, or 'Bread Stop' part of the name means that goods are prepared off-site, in this case at French Fantasies Boulangerie Patisserie and delivered fresh-baked as required.

Sandwiched between busy St Kilda Road and the Albert Park Golf Course and opening at 6.30am, this small cafe caters to business travellers, tourists, city workers and fringe dwellers.

Service is reasonably brisk, and a small a-l-carte menu of French cafe classics complements the vast array of cakes, pastries and boulangerie items that are displayed temptingly across the front of the central counter.

Cheery red umbrellas line the outdoor area, accessible by large double doors and viewable from indoors through a large open window.

Depending on the time of day, and your mood, Fleur has great coffee, a special menu of stylishly presented exotic teas, wine and even cognac should you need something a little stronger.

If a picnic is your thing, grab a baguette, a bottle of wine, some cheese and other tasty fillings from the charcuterie section and head to any of the nearby parks.

There are tables for sharing, a row of banquettes and more intimate options for one or two.

But don't leave your run too late, Fleur Depot de Pain closes at 7pm.
