It's the Federal Election again, Canberra-and that means, democracy sausages!

So what in the world is a democracy sausage, you may ask? Well, a democracy sausage is basically a barbecued sausage served on a slice of bread and bought at a polling booth sausage sizzle on election day.

On Saturday, May 18, several of Canberra's schools will be operating as polling stations, and in some of these schools, you'll get to cast your vote and grab your democracy sausage as well. Or if there's a cake stall, you can also eat your cake and have it too!

The schools that are holding sausage sizzles, cake stalls, etc will be using the funds raised for much-needed equipment and resources. And the bulk of the work will be done by volunteer parents on the schools' Parents & Citizens' Committees, which do amazing jobs throughout the year in fundraising for their schools. So if you're right now despairing over our politicians and the state of politics in Australia, at least you won't need to despair over the sausage sandwiches you'll be buying on election day because you'll be supporting our local schools.

So where can you get your democracy sausage on election day? Here are some schools where you can vote and have your sausage (or cake) and eat it too.

Lyons Early Childhood School. 38 Tarraleah Crescent, Lyons. The P&C is running a cake stall and sausage sizzle to raise funds for enhancing our outdoor areas and playground.

Red Hill School. 35 Astrolabe Street, Red Hill. The P&C is running a BBQ, cake stall and garage sale with books, toys and clothes to raise money to redevelop the school oval. There will also be hamburgers, cold drinks and buskers to entertain you while you wait.

St Jude's Primary. 49 Mulley Street, Holder. There will be a BBQ and cake stall.

Gordon Primary School. Knoke Ave, Gordon. There will be sausages, bacon and egg rolls, barista coffee and a variety of markets.

Arawang Primary School. Nemarang Crescent, Waramanga. The school will hold an Election Day mini fete.

Southern Cross Early Childhood School. 33 Wirraway Cres, Scullin. There will be democracy sausages but so much more. Vegan and vegetarian options, cake stall, plant stall, chocolate toss game, lollies, drinks, raffle! EFTPOS available for purchases $10 or more.

Evatt Primary School. 42 Heydon Cres, Evatt. There will be a BBQ and cake stall. Drinks will also be available.

Palmerston District Primary School. 80 Kosciuszko Ave, Palmerston. There will be a sausage sizzle, cake stall and coffee van. Halal options available.

Majura Primary School. 101 Knox Street, Watson. There will be a Sausage Sizzle, Cake Stall and Coffee Van. Much of the funds raised go towards continual improvements for the school community or to fund larger events such as the Spring Fair that reach broadly into the community.

Giralang Primary School. 12 Atalumba Close, Giralang. There will be sausage sandwiches, B&E Rolls, vegetarian nachos, chicken curry, cakes and cookies and Espresso coffee will all be available. Halal options available.
