Growing up as a child fed primarily on a diet of superheroes, action movies, and video games, nothing gets my blood pumping more than realistic simulated violence. However, as Grand Theft Auto style killing sprees are generally frowned upon by the police, I'm left to find other more legal outlets for my murderous rage.

Few activities match the potent cocktail of terror, adrenaline and sadistic glee that accompanies a furious round of paintball. The satisfaction derived from stealthily hunting an unknowing target will bring a smile to even the most jaded of armchair violence enthusiasts. What other outdoor activity allows (and in fact encourages) you to legitimately shoot both friends, family, and complete strangers in the face without fear of repercussion?

Delta Force Paintball is one of Perth's newest paintball providers, with 2 locations already open both around a 30-40 minute drive from the Perth CBD. Their website boasts "Perth's best paintball" with "world class facilities" and "the best equipment", an assertion that my friends and I were eager to put to the test.

Delta Force Paintball caters to both amateur and professional players as well as parties, corporate groups and bucks/hens nights. Booking in larger groups allows for a degree of price negotiation so if the costs seem steep, try giving them a call. You may end up paying much less. In addition Delta Force will price match comparable offers from competitors for pre-paid packages and entry fees.

The issued equipment is your standard jumpsuit, mask and hopper-fed gas-powered semi-automatic gun. As a welcome addition, Delta Force also provides bandoliers and light vests of armor. Teams were designated by the staff and comprised of around 15-20 people each. Geared up, tense with anticipation we headed out, ready to dish out some paint based justice.

The fields are large and varied ranging from the classic field of barrels, to a giant pyramid, a small mock western town, a wooden medieval castle and a field divided in two inspired by the Berlin Wall. The maps are well designed although a bit lacking in imagination. Perhaps I was expecting a little too much.

This was all soon forgotten as the round started and the paintballs started to fly. I frantically avoided trying to get hit while attempting to close the distance between me and my opponents. There were various game modes specific to the field that we were playing on. If you've ever been paintballing before you know the type, VIP, Defend the Castle, slightly modified versions of Capture the Flag. Nothing really groundbreaking, but it was fun, it was exciting. With a massive grin I happily shot away with reckless abandon making it right to the walls of the castle ready to burst in and be a hero.

Then I ran out of bullets.

This highlights a key issue I have with Delta Force Paintball. The maps, game modes, and the inclusion of a re-spawn period at the beginning of every round seem to be tailored specifically to make you use an unnecessary amount of ammunition. Also 15-20 players per team leaves very little room for flanking and instead encourages players to stay in one spot and shoot while waiting for enough people to be eliminated before moving.

Those details aside, I still had an immense amount of fun. Paintball is the most exciting, intense, heart pounding, adrenaline rush you can buy for under $150. If you've never been before I highly recommend you try it at least once, and if you have you probably don't need convincing. Just remember though if you want to play without restrictions, be prepared to pay for what you use.
