Delicious Korean Dessert Dumplings
Walk along Grote Street in Adelaide's Central Business District and you're likely to come across the brightly coloured hole in the wall-style snack bar, "Delimanjoo", alongside the Central Market Car Park. A franchise from South Korea, this is the second such outlet in Adelaide, with another such shop opening in West Lakes.

The shop sells a small variety of savoury and sweet food as well as a selection of drinks. Lightly crumbed and fried rice balls, stuffed with bulgogi, teriyaki chicken, spicy pork, tuna or kimchi, are displayed behind a glass cabinet, the traditional domain of pies, pasties and sausage rolls.

Beside the warmer are the "delimanjoo" themselves. Reminiscent of chewy waffles filled with piping hot custard, the small sweet dumplings are made to order by a machine not unlike a waffle press.

Batter is dripped in first, followed by custard, then more batter, before the press is closed shut. Within minutes, it is popped open and perfectly formed, steaming, molten custard filled dumplings are spread out on baking paper. Their shape is somewhat of an edible Rorschach test, appearing to some to be a flower bud/flower while to others they appear to be similar to a cockroach or a large cicada.

Regardless of their shape, once allowed to cool the dumplings are a delicious combination of slightly chewy dough yielding to a pleasantly smooth, creamy interior. The crunchy rice balls are also novel, with a good combination of crunch, carbohydrate and seasoned protein. A variety of different drinks, sundaes and waffles are also available, ranging from iced chocolate to watermelon and grapefruit lemonade.

If you're in the city and looking for an interesting alternative to usual lunch finger food fare, Delimanjoo offers a small selection of delicious sweet and savoury options, perfect for a quick bite near Central Market.
