I was lucky enough to have all the boys accounted for so my daughter and I got the rare opportunity to go out by ourselves for morning tea. I've been to a few other Degani's but have been meaning to try out the Eltham cafe.
Every time I go past it is busy so I think that must be a recommendation. It's in a prime position in Eltham near lots of amenities with plenty of parking. There's a long veranda along one side for outdoor dining. There are always people eating there even in the winter as they provide heaters.
Most tables were full of people of all ages enjoying a big breakfast or enjoying a coffee. There was an older couple who looked like they'd settled in for a while with their newspapers open. Some teenagers had met with their skateboards in hand and there was a couple of families with young kids. Despite the number of customers it was relatively quiet inside.
It might be just that I'm always on a tight schedule but I thought it took too long for the hot chocolates to arrive. I know they had a lot of take away orders so perhaps they prioritise those first. Maybe they assume their other customers come to relax instead of needing to get to Bunnings, the bank, fruit shop and be home in an hour and a half! The waitress said they were very busy.
To their credit the hot chocolate was just the way I ordered it - very hot and very strong. Sometimes when I put in this special request at other venues it comes out just like everybody else's. It was very small though and very sweet. No need for the marshmallows.
If you're looking for a huge range of sweet treats and a great cup of coffee or hot chocolate you can't go past Degani's in Eltham. The raspberry and white chocolate muffin came hot. It was light and fluffy but deliciously crunchy on top. It was the biggest muffin I have ever seen. My teenage daughter said it was 'big enough for two people with a great appetite!'
They have slices, cakes, donuts and croissant. They also sell bread, savoury snacks such as pies and wraps. Next time I go I'm going to try the new cronut which look great. I'm guessing they are a cross between a donut and a croissant. I haven't eaten a meal there but please add a comment if you have.
