Up the stairs, you are confronted with a lounge bar oozing eclectic style and attitude. Mismatching armchairs, lamps, chandeliers, and wallpaper give the feeling you have stepped into a kooky Englishman's library. Around the corner there is the balcony, where you may sit overlooking Perth's most indie street and views of the city.
The staff are affable and individual, further cementing that this is a bar quintessentially for the Mount Lawley local. Don't be fooled though, all cliques are welcome and all ages celebrated, which is what makes this experience so much fun.
With a substantial cocktail and drinks list, and well trained cocktail staff, this bar presents a nice escape from the rambunctious pubs on the strip. There are mostly international beers, to delight many beer snobs. My favourite option is blindly trying the cocktail special of the night! Food can be ordered, and is brought up from The Flying Scotsman below.
The music only adds to the vibe and changes through the night – from chilled out, relaxed tunes to phat drum and bass, there is something for every mood and every taste.
Beaufort Street is a growing favourite among Perth trend setters, and it is hard to believe this bar has been around as long as it has yet still appears to be a well-kept secret.
Only on certain nights is it full to capacity and difficult to get to the bar – otherwise there is the perfect ambiance between busy and comfortable.
For a night of understated cool in a bar that embodies the Beaufort St charm, Defectors is one to try. But don't tell too many people – this is a secret worth keeping.
