With a brother who collects everything and anything related to Star Wars, I felt it was my duty to check out Death Star Canteen. It's a popular spot where plenty of people getting their morning caffeine fix and taking photos with their mobile phones. I was pleased to find the Star Wars theme was subtly achieved.
The café décor is modern wooden picnic style benches with monochrome touches. There is a stencil of storm troopers on the back wall and another hanging in a hammock from the ceiling. There's an amazing Lego sculpture and cute R2-D2 teapots.
I ordered a Death by Hot Chocolate which was delicious and hit the right spot on a cold winter's Friday. I was too early for lunch, so I asked for my grass fed corned beef sandwiches with purple sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and mustard to go. I opened up my package at work and found the perfect combination of flavours between herbed focaccia bread.
The current menu at Death Star Canteen has eight different sandwich combinations, including several vegan options. There is soup and pasta of the day, which on the day I visited was penne all'arrabbiata. In addition, there are a number of tempting daily specials on the blackboard.
There is a dedicated breakfast menu, with scrumptious options like Bircher muesli, sourdough fruit toast, tuna antipasto grill, scrambled free range eggs, pulled pork and smoky beans.
It was great to see the barista using beans from West End's The Coffee Roaster. There's no surprises with the coffee options so you're sure to find your favourite order available. There's a loyalty card if you work or live nearby where if you buy ten, you'll get one for free. If you are after something cold there's iced coffee, iced chocolate, Karma Colas and wine or beer.
This funky Star Wars themed café is located on Queen Street and open Mondays to Fridays at the moment. Follow Death Star Canteen on Facebook to find out their latest opening times and days (they are hoping to trial Saturdays). It's a great place to hang out, even if you'd have no idea who Luke's father is.
