Dear Dorothy is a colourful and joyful café with a refreshingly charming and authentic ethos. Which makes it somewhat of a conundrum given it's in Saddleworth - in the mid-north of South Australia.

Dear Dorothy
The owner, Matthew Sheppard, is somewhat of a trailblazer with his unique concepts in country towns and this one is a real cracker.
Saddleworth is a small country town just over an hour north of Adelaide on the Barrier Highway and isn't far from the Clare Valley. It's got a long pastoral and railway history and is full of run-down heritage buildings. The main street is a quiet and historic scene featuring a beautiful little centre 'square', Bee and Hill Park, where you can learn more about the history of the town.
Just across the road, Matt, originally the creator/owner of Duck Duck Goose café in Peterborough, has settled into the old butchery on the main street and given it his signature sparkle. Now there are two cafes in Saddleworth! It's definitely a town worth planning a stopover at on your next Sunday drive.
The welcoming interior space is filled with old and new objects with plenty to see, but somehow it just has a 'together' feel. The big glass cabinet is filled with an ever-changing menu of café delights and a spectacular old boiler (the coffee machine) turns out some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. The outside garden is a quirky space bursting with colour and classic old things to warm the heart. Take the time to bask in the history and often wonderful weather of the mid-north over some nibbles and a drink as you take a break from touring.
We grabbed a few baked and toasted goodies including focaccia and croissants (pies from
The Little Red Grape bakery in nearby Sevenhill), a fruit smoothie, and a delicious iced coffee.
We'll be back for some of the amazing specials Matt decides to dish up regularly. This is one of the things that makes Dear Dorothy extra interesting – it's the constant refreshing of the food offers alongside old faves that you know it will all always be delicious.
It's a busy little place! Locals are always popping in and out of the store, but Matthew, the ever-convivial host is always up for a chat and makes everybody feel welcome.
Get in as early as you can for the best selection and
keep up to date with opening times and specials on the socials.
