A young woman escapes from captivity only to be hit by a car. She is taken to hospital with a little girl, who tells them her name is Hannah and the woman is called Lena. Lena's parents rush to the hospital to see their daughter who disappeared 13 years earlier, but all is not as it seems.
Dear Child (2023), originally called 'Liebes Kind', is a German mini-series based on the novel of the same title by Romy Hausmann. It's an electrifying thriller, with just six episodes. I didn't intend to binge-watch it all but my heart was in my mouth at the end of episode one and I just had to keep going. I don't want to spoil anything, but there are plenty of twists and turns and a truly insidious villain.
The child actors in this are incredible. Naila Schuberth (from Bird Box Barcelona) is chilling as the strange, ever observant, Hannah, and it is easy to feel for Sammy Schrein as her little brother, Jonathan. The rest of the cast are also good, including Kim Riedle, as the mysterious woman, Haley Louise Jones as Aida, the determined police detective, and Hans Löw as Gerd, Lena's childhood friend who has never given up hope of finding her.
Liebes Kind is an enthralling thriller that will grip you from the first episode. It is currently streaming on Netflix in Australia.
