It was stuck in development hell for 11 years before 20th Century Fox finally greenlight the project, thanks to some leaked footage that broke the internet and sent fanboys into a frenzy, giving the studio no choice but to bring the Merc with a Mouth to the big screen. Visceral action sequences, great comedy and one of the greatest opening credits I've ever seen, Deadpool delivered the goods and erased the memory of his old incarnation in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Ryan Reynolds was put on this earth to be one of the sexiest men alive and to play Deadpool, he was meant to play this role, he embodied every element of Deadpool and it was immensely evident that he loved this character, he has wanted to play him for a long, long time. With this stellar performance he has redeemed himself from the abomination of Deadpool that could shoot lasers out of his eyes and had his mouth sewn shut, and the horrific portrayal of the Green Lantern. He even mentions it in the movie when he delivers a funny line about him not wanting his super-hero suit to be green or animated.
This movie is great because it didn't hold back, the cuffs were off! Director Tim Miller, who is going to have many movie making opportunities now, had creative freedom to make an R-Rated Deadpool movie, and that was the only way to do it. A watered down disney-esque version of Deadpool would have fallen into the trenches and got hit by a box office bomb, but thankfully Tim miller hit it out of the park. And when I say R-Rated, I mean Ryan Reynolds getting it on with Morena Baccarin in an unusual way R-Rated, do not take your kids, I repeat do not take your kids.
Action Comedy Love Story Super-hero movie. I don't know if it can be classified as that, but it has the right amount of everything. It is by far one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, T. J. Miller had me in stitches and his lines about Deadpool's face need to be printed on t-shirts. Ryan Reynolds' humor accentuates Deadpool's character, making it even more believable that he's right out of the comics.
The relationship between Morena Baccarin and Ryan Reynolds had a flare that actually made you care for them and their situation, it wasn't some random chick that he meets where the movie tries to force you to feel something for the character, no, this was actually believable.
It was interesting seeing how they incorporated the X-men universe into this franchise, with the likes of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, this could lead to potential cross overs in the future, and maybe a Deadpool/Wolverine movie? if Hugh Jackman decides to make a comeback.
Deadpool doesn't need to compete with the likes of Batman v Superman or the plethora of Marvel films this year, because it is awesome and different in it's own way and other studios are going to make more Rated-R movies because Deadpool's success. I must mention Ed Skrein for doing a great job as the villain, the protagonist is only as good as its antagonist. Watch out for an unexpected cameo in the form of a magazine and stay till the very end.
I give Deadpool 8 out of 10 chimichangas, go watch it, but don't take your kids! You'd have a lot of explaining to do.
