Located on Magill Road, De Sate is barely a month old - the restaurant had their soft opening on the 9th of September this year. Because of this, there isn't much on the menu yet, but what they do have so far is pretty good. And the best part is that it's halal!

As the name of the restaurant suggests, their specialty is satay. There is a choice of either chicken or lamb, the former served with peanut sauce and the other with a sweet soy sauce. It took a while for our orders to arrive - almost half an hour as a large family before us ordered five plates of satay, and the dishes are grilled as you order.

It's a good thing that the food was delicious after the long wait. The satay meat was tender and juicy, though I enjoyed the chicken more. Other than that, we also ordered sop kambing (lamb soup) and tongseng , a type of lamb curry stew.

Both dishes were yummy and reminded me of the food I had in Indonesia years ago while on holiday. The deliciously powerful flavour of lamb was very much evident, and the chunks of meat were tender. All soups and stews are served with a choice of steamed rice or lontong (rice cakes). We only ordered one drink, the soda gembira, which literally means 'happy soda'. It definitely looks cheerful - a pink drink made up of sweetened milk, syrup and soda water. Definitely give it a try.

My female friend and I found the meal quite filling due to the rice, and the serving was reasonable to me, as all the dishes on the menu cost $8.50 each. My partner said that he could have eaten a lot more though.

Overall, we had a pleasant dinner; good food, a cosy, well-lit setting and friendly service. Check it out, especially if you're into lamb and Indonesian cuisine. And if you're lucky, they might have special menu on the night, so check the website before your visit.
