Once upon a time, there lived a
princess , who with her magical powers, went about the land rescuing countless Melbourne mums and dads from the terror of entertaining a group of sugar-high six-year-olds. These helpless parents live in fear of the cupcake-and-cordial-fuelled mobs that threaten to descend upon their homes in a terrifying whirl of glittery fairy skirts and Jiffies!
The common all-consuming terror of being faced with hosting a child's birthday party has been known to reduce even the calmest of mum to a quivering wreck. Thank heavens for the magic of the princess (or fairy, Barbie,
magician or dance r) who turns even the scariest of Hannah Montana-singing, One Direction-loving squealers into entertained, face-painted angels.
In a world where kids sing along to Jessie J and Nikki Minaj more readily than The Wiggles and Hi-5, and are more likely to recognise the name Lady Gaga than Mary Poppins, you may think the princess is fighting a losing battle. Fear not! This magical lady from a faraway world (ie
Dazzle Me Princess and Fairy Parties ) possesses secrets that even the savviest parents can't find on Google or buy on eBay.
Kids can play Sing Star on their Wii, download Barbie apps for their iPad and watch Disney movies in 3D, but the fact is that when the real thing suddenly turns up larger than life on their doorstep they are instantly hit for six. Jaws drop, eyes widen and noise stops as they consider (often for the first time) that fun and fantasy might actually exist somewhere other than on a screen. They are generally so awe-struck for the first ten minutes that they forget to squeal, consume party pies or jump on the couches at all! To the utter amazement of their equally awe-struck parents they are miraculously sitting quietly and listening to what the fluttering sparkly blonde lady is saying. Magic.
Without giving away all the princess' secrets, I can tell you she has single handedly established one very astonishing fact; no matter how many digital devices they possess, there is no six-year-old that doesn't like face-painting or pass-the-parcel. Yes it's true; newspaper and little plastic toys still have the magical ability to rival a game of Angry Birds, and some rainbow paint and glitter can produce a bigger smile than opening a new Xbox.
Thus all over Melbourne and beyond, parents are rescued from juvenile chaos and enjoy a calm cup of coffee with only the faint rustle of ballerina tutus somewhere in the distance.
