Day Trip to Sassafras

Sassafras - Even the name sounds inviting.
This gorgeous little town is located about 50km from Melbourne's CBD in the Dandenong Ranges, so it's the perfect distance for a day trip (but you might want to stay longer after experiencing the town's relaxing laid back atmosphere).
The only downside to this cute village is that it tends to be a little touristy, so if you can swing it, a day through the week would be ideal when the crowds are a bit smaller. This town has something for everyone – unique clothes and antique stores, bush walking trails and several eateries.
If you can manage to get to it,
Miss Marples Tearooms is a local institution – but the line for a table usually trails straight out the door. So if you're looking for somewhere to eat that still offers great food with a slightly smaller crowd, check out the
Black Kettle Tearooms .
This place will make you feel like you went to your mum's place for lunch. The food is all home-made (thankfully you won't find any instant mashed potato here) and you will leave well fed and satisfied for under $20 per person. Don't forget to check out the to-die-for dessert menu after lunch. The service is also very homely, but this isn't the kind of place that you want to eat at when you're in a rush as it can take a little while to get your meals. However the wait will be well worth it, I promise.
