Day Trip to Sassafras

Sassafras - Even the name sounds inviting.

This gorgeous little town is located about 50km from Melbourne's CBD in the Dandenong Ranges, so it's the perfect distance for a day trip (but you might want to stay longer after experiencing the town's relaxing laid back atmosphere).

The only downside to this cute village is that it tends to be a little touristy, so if you can swing it, a day through the week would be ideal when the crowds are a bit smaller. This town has something for everyone unique clothes and antique stores, bush walking trails and several eateries.

If you can manage to get to it, Miss Marples Tearooms is a local institution but the line for a table usually trails straight out the door. So if you're looking for somewhere to eat that still offers great food with a slightly smaller crowd, check out the Black Kettle Tearooms.

This place will make you feel like you went to your mum's place for lunch. The food is all home-made (thankfully you won't find any instant mashed potato here) and you will leave well fed and satisfied for under $20 per person. Don't forget to check out the to-die-for dessert menu after lunch. The service is also very homely, but this isn't the kind of place that you want to eat at when you're in a rush as it can take a little while to get your meals. However the wait will be well worth it, I promise.
